William Jefferson Clinton， commonly known as Bill Clinton， was an American politician who served as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Born in Hope， Arkansas， he was a member of the Democratic Party. He was governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992， and Arkansas Attorney General from 1977 to 1979. Clinton was elected president in 1992， defeating incumbent George H. W. Bush. He was re-elected in 1996， becoming the first Democrat since Franklin D. Roosevelt to serve two full terms. During his presidency， Clinton presided over the longest period of peacetime economic expansion in American history. He also signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement， which created a trade bloc consisting of the United States， Canada， and Mexico. At the end of his second term， Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with a scandal involving a White House intern， but was acquitted by the Senate.
